EDGE Enablement in wireless networks: the standardization path
EDGE is at the forefront of Innovation in IoT services – and not only them – paving the way to new application categories based on low latency and extreme reliability, distributed intelligent computing, decentralized management. Standardization can help guarantee interoperability, economy of scale and a common harmonized framework to cope with both new user’s performance requirements and new network models to ensure local significance in a global design.
The 3GPP 5G standards, are underpinning the EDGE approach in wireless networks, leveraging on cloud native service based architecture and hybrid access to the network. The “Multi-Access Edge Computing” standard, developed by ETSI, is complementing this model with new LAN design principles and implementation options. The intervention outlines the current standardization effort and the key issues still on the table
